Matrescence

The name of the transformation you are going through

One of my favorite words!
It describes one of the greatest transformations a woman can experience:
The physical, emotional, social, and spiritual process of becoming a mother.

Just as adolescence marks the transition into adulthood,
matrescence marks the crossing into motherhood,
a rebirth that forever changes the way we see the world… and ourselves.

It is a cycle of deconstruction and reconstruction,
where we learn to inhabit a new body, a new mind, and a new heart.

It is light and shadow.
It is joy and vulnerability.
It is strength and surrender.

We often talk about birth as the moment a baby is born,
but it’s also the moment a mother is born.

Matrescence is a period of profound physical, emotional, hormonal, and spiritual change. It’s a transformation that doesn’t happen in a single moment, but over time, as your body, mind, and identity adjust to this new way of being.

It’s the way your heart expands to hold more than you ever thought possible.
It’s the shifting of priorities, relationships, and rhythms.
It’s the tears that come out of nowhere, the deep love, and sometimes the deep loneliness too.

Matrescence is not something to rush through or fix.
It’s something to be witnessed, honored, and supported.

Matrescence reminds us:
Motherhood is not a destination — it’s an unfolding.
A re-birth.
A remembering.

And this is why Mother Mae was born,
to serve this very becoming.
To remind each woman that she, too, is being born through the process of birth.
